if i read/hear “nuked the fridge” one more time…

June 20, 2008 · 2 Comments

dear internets:

stop trying to make “nuked the fridge” part of our lexicon.  it’s retarded.  we already have a term for the phenomenon you’re trying to describe.  it’s called “jumping the shark” and phonetically it’s far superior. plus the reasoning behind “nuked the fridge” just isn’t valid.

yeah, indiana jones avoided being killed by an atomic blast by crawling inside a lead-lined refrigarator.  you might also recall that he also avoided being melted by the wrath of god by simply keeping his eyes shut.  he also watched a man pull the heart out of a dude with his bare hand and the dude somehow remained alive for quite some time afterward.   and he met a knight that was over a 700 years old in a cave in a desert with a cup that makes you immortal.  but now you cry foul?

in the words of the great gob bluthe: “c’mon!”

sincerely,
my ironic mustache

obligatory indiana jones post

eh, it was better than temple of doom, which was all i was hoping for. could have used more cgi prairie dogs in my opinion, but that’s just me. i still think the dark knight is going to be the best movie of the summer.

on a related note, baz lurman’s new one looks kinda interesting. i wasn’t immediately a fan of his, but both romeo+juliet and moulin rouge have grown into two of my favorite movies. so we’ll see.

also, if you have the time, and i know you do if you’re reading this, slate has been following the r. kelly trial this week. it’s nuts and there’s a lot of great crap in there, including using the wayans brothers movie little man as part of the defense, but my personal favorite is this:

Along with the logs, the lower level of Kelly’s former residence includes a short lap pool and a basketball court with a mural depicting the singer shooting hoops with the Tasmanian Devil.

i would buy that. for a lot of money.

“you’re about to jump out of a perfectly good airplane johnny, how do you feel about that?”

the movie blog is running a piece about a possible sequel to point break.  i am vehemently opposed to this idea.  when i was a kid, point break was one of my favorite movies.  today, it’s still pretty badass.  keanu has effectively been playing the johnny utah character ever since (surfing cop!!1!), swayze is at his swayze-ist, and anthony kiedis gets shot in the foot, which should have happened in real life years ago.

but i seriously doubt anyone can recreate the magic of the 90′s gem more than 15 years later.  this supposed sequel smacks of roadhouse 2: last call, a straight to dvd “classic” that does all it can to erase the glory of another swayze masterpiece.  it’s a cash-grab.  the only way i see it working at all is if they get both keanu and swayze back, which i really don’t see happening.  point break was a time and a place that cannot be revisited without a suped-up delorean.

this more or less echoes my feelings about indiana jones and the kingdom of stephen spielberg’s bank account.  but that’s for another post.
