obligatory inauguration post

January 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

obama_02

i was stuck at work today so i was unable to watch any of the inauguration festivities.  i did, however, stream obama’s address via npr’s website.  easily one of the best since reagan, if not kennedy.  one of those speeches kids will study years from now in elementary school.  my favorite bit?

to those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

which, the more and more i read it, bares a strange similarity to a line from “a losing season” by sorry about dresden.

i don’t have time for problems like these/i’d get off your back if you got off your knees.

something tells me that obama isn’t jamming out to early saddle creek, but one can hope.  and isn’t that what this whole thing is about?

douche of the week

October 24, 2008 · 1 Comment

introducing a new friday feature here at my ironic mustache: the douche of the week award.  and the innagural award goes to none other than ashley todd.  yesterday, drudge reported a disturbing story involving a mccain staffer getting mugged and then disfigured by an obama supporter.  shocking, i know.  here’s a picture of ashley todd, the 20-year-old who was allegedly attacked by 6’4″, 200 lb black man who “wanted to teach her a lesson for being a mccain supporter”  by carving a “B” into her cheek:

looks pretty rough, right? in the blogosphere, the right-wingers immediately used the incident to condemn every obama supporter and the left-wingers called it a hoax.  it was the talk of the internet, until people started realizing what you’re probably realizing right now.  the “B” is backwards, as if done in the mirror.  and something about her story just didn’t add up.  why would the mugger return to attack her further after looking at her bumper sticker?  what about the camera on the atm?  turns out, she made up the entire thing. so, ashley todd, for being not only an idiot, but also an attention-starved racist, i grant you the coveted “douche of the week” award for friday, october 24, 2008.  congrats!

it’s spelled d-e-s-p-e-r-a-t-e.

here’s john mccain’s latest ad:

political affiliations aside (i’m an obama supporter), this is just a terrible ad for a few reasons.  first, the beginning has absolutely no correlation to the end.  obama is popular.  ok.  gotcha.  also, he doesn’t want to drill for oil in america or offshore.  ok?

more importantly, the ad really just doesn’t make sense.  conceptually, the idea is sound.  ”obama enjoys a rockstar status and is over-hyped by a lot of standards, but he lacks substance.”  so show a boyband or the beatles or michael jackson, not britney spears or paris hilton.  people hate britney and paris.  they’re only celebrities cause they’re trainwrecks.  people don’t chant “paris! paris!” at her “events.”  it shows a gross disconnect with america sentiment.

epic fail, mccain.  epic fail.

sweetiegate ’08!

May 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

barack obama calls a reporter from fox news “sweetie.” there’s a lot of very important, world-changing implications here. first, she works for fox news. she got off pretty light with sweetie. second, i don’t think the comment is so much sexist as it is condescending, the female equivalent of “buddy” or “chief” or “gaylord.” it’s kinda dickish, but it’s also kinda funny.

but the real issue is, when did it become ok just to tag “-gate” at the end of any word to name a political scandal? i wish there was a term for this kind of lazy usage of the english language. for now i’ll go with the old standby: retarded.

“I’ve met many chocoholics but I’ve never seen any Chocohol. We’ve got an epidemic – people that don’t understand the rules of word endings… they’re probably over-workahol-d.” -demetri martin

“who are the patriots? the la-li-lu-le-lo?!”

May 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment

so i was gonna post about the obama rally yesterday, which was pretty cool and the first time i’d seen a presidential candidate in person since the ill-fated al gore incident of 2000, but i don’t really have much to say about it other than it was kinda cool, i was really far away, and really hungry the whole time.  also, here’s a picture of one of my coworkers in a silly green shirt right behind him:

but what i’m really excited about is metal gear solid: 4, which is about a month away still.  i mean, i have it tattooed on my arm, but i might just have to pick up one of these too:

i figure this way i can be a huge nerd and a bluetooth jackass at the same time.  ladies, one at a time please.

updated: just for the hell of it, a sweet mgs4 trailer:
