my mom called me last night to remind me that barbara walters was doing an hour-long interview with certified badass patrick swayze. what makes patrick swayze a badass, aside from awesome movies like roadhouse and point break?  the fact that the dude has one of the worst forms of cancer ever and he just keeps being awesome.  some choice info gleaned from the interview:

  • swayze still smokes.  “when it looks like I may live longer than five minutes? i’ll drop cigarettes like a hot potato.”
  • most people die within a few months of diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer.  swayze is almost a year out and still kicking ass.
  • even though he underwent (and continues to) extreme chemotherapy, swayze still has his hair.  chemo don’t fuck around with swayze.
  • swayze works 12-hour days on his new show the beast even though he’s, you know, FIGHTING PANCREATIC CANCER.
  • swayze refuses to take painkillers, obviously, because pain don’t hurt.
  • he doesn’t have guardian angels. he has “guardian warriors.”

you can check out a transcript and a few video clips over at abc news. i wish mr. swayze all the best and hope he continues to beat the odds and tear the throat out of pancreatic cancer. good on ya, sir.

“you’re about to jump out of a perfectly good airplane johnny, how do you feel about that?”

the movie blog is running a piece about a possible sequel to point break.  i am vehemently opposed to this idea.  when i was a kid, point break was one of my favorite movies.  today, it’s still pretty badass.  keanu has effectively been playing the johnny utah character ever since (surfing cop!!1!), swayze is at his swayze-ist, and anthony kiedis gets shot in the foot, which should have happened in real life years ago.

but i seriously doubt anyone can recreate the magic of the 90′s gem more than 15 years later.  this supposed sequel smacks of roadhouse 2: last call, a straight to dvd “classic” that does all it can to erase the glory of another swayze masterpiece.  it’s a cash-grab.  the only way i see it working at all is if they get both keanu and swayze back, which i really don’t see happening.  point break was a time and a place that cannot be revisited without a suped-up delorean.

this more or less echoes my feelings about indiana jones and the kingdom of stephen spielberg’s bank account.  but that’s for another post.
