i’m stoked to announce that starting on monday, i will be taking over the man zero video game blog on mlive. my buddy jon hooked me up with the gig, which he inherited from coworker. so i’m the third guy to write for man zero, the tanooki suit, if you will. i will of course continue to blog here, but all the video game stuff can be found over on there. also, if there’s something coming out that you think should be on my radar, feel free to let me know.
i was finally able to download the resident evil 5 demo yesterday on my ps3. and i gotta say, it’s really hard. it may just be that you’re sorta dropped into the middle of a couple levels without any sort of training or familiarity with the controls, but damn i died a lot.
and the controls. hmmm. i’m kinda split on it. on one hand, they’re the standard resident evil controls. on the other, they’re the standard resident evil controls. i feel like with the addition of 28 days later-style track star zombies, the ability to run and shoot should be a no-brainer. it worked really well in dead space. still, the wonky controls are part of what makes a resident evil game a resident evil game. that and endless searching for a rook plug, which you need to get the eagle crest, which opens up a secret elevator to an even more secret lab beneath a mansion on the outskirts of town, which houses mutant sharks. the lab, not the mansion.
but visually, it certainly looks great. we’ll see how things pan out with the full release right around the corner.
seeing as i have a ps3, this list is soley ps3 titles. it’s not about fanboyism, it’s just the system that i chose for a multitude of reasons. there’s plenety of great titles on the 360 and the wii. these are just my favorite (ps3) games of 2008.
1 . metal gear solid 4
this is a no-brainer for me. my favorite franchise comes to an epic conclusion with stunning visuals, engrossing storytelling, and great game mechanics. my hat’s off to kojima on this one. now hurry up and get cracking on mgs5. or just remake the original nes metal gear for next gen. that would be incredible.
2. dead space
i actually haven’t finished this yet. i’m on chapter ten (of twelve) at the moment. the atmosphere of this game is downright creepy and the story is very solid. the best part about dead space is how immerse the experience is. think event horizon, but actually good.
3. littlebigplanet
littlebigplanet just makes me smile. it is the most charming game i’ve ever played and it’s just damn fun. i haven’t played around with the online component as much as the internet i “borrow” from my neighbors is less than reliable. but i see untold possibilities in the user-generated content.
4. devil may cry 4
i almost forgot about dmc4 because it came out pretty early this year, but that doesn’t make it any less great. i wasn’t ever a huge fan of the series, but dmc4 was a ton of fun. it had a great wry sense of humor while telling a compelling story with impressive visuals. dante has never looked so hot.
5. wipeout hd
i am terrible at this game. really bad. the first few levels i was winning trophies and thinking i was the best wipeout player ever. then it gets super hard. but it’s a lot of fun and it looks fantastic. and it brings me back to the early days of the original playstation when everything was mind-blowing.
so yesterday i was telling my friend joe how much i wanted a littlebigplanet beta key. then i went ahead and pre-ordered it off amazon. and then, lo and behold, kotaku pointed me to this article from usa today giving away about 15,000 beta keys.
i’m super stoked. the game looks totally insane and i can’t wait to check out all the crazy crap people have come up with so far. part of me wants to fake sick and go home right now, but i think i can make it til five.

ps- i have a spare key if anyone wants one.
update: they gave me a total of 4 keys. two are spoken for (posters below, i just emailed them out), one is mine. one more up for grabs.
video game movies have never, in the history of film, been good. max payne has the potential of not suckatude. but a game that cinematic lends itself to the movie format. however, the same could be said about the resident evil series and we all know how well that panned out. the point of all of this rambling is the the total wtf-iness of the following news regarding the movie adaptation of the sims, care of moviesonline.ca
“The Sims, as you know, you can control your imaginary world, right? And our movie, a young man, a 16 year old kid of a 14 year old kid and his friend get their hands on this thing called the Sims Infinity Pack, right, which kind of this very strange video game store which was there just for that moment, and seemingly wasn’t all that.
But what they realize is that they can scan their world in, because this is the most life like, real Sims game ever. And as they are playing this they are all of a sudden realizing is what they are playing on the game is having an effect on the real world.
So in effect, through the game, they are able to control their world. It’s wish fulfillment, and obviously it turns against them.”
first, that’s an actual quote from the producer. i feel like it was written in crayons, you know, like this:
second, wow. on the top three list of worst games to turn into movies, i’ve got the sims at number one, followed by guitar hero at number two (brett ratner already wants in if that tells you anything), and tetris at number three. actually, i take that back. tetris, in the hands of the right director, say jerry bruckheimer or micheal bay, could be really good.
t’s time for my ironic mustache’s patented (patent pending) one line review round-up. all ratings are out of five stars. all opinions are the god’s honest truth. here we go.
today is the day! well, yesterday was the day technically. but i held off so i could drive out to lansing tonight and play it with my best friend joe. as far back as we’ve been friends, going on ten years now, we’ve been playing video games together. i have fond, terrifying memories of playing resident evil: code veronica for dreamcast in his parent’s living room so many years ago. so this weekend, we’re building a fort and playing metal gear til our eyes bleed.
i really don’t care if some people think this game is racist. honestly, in context, it’s not. but whatever. it looks amazing. i just hope it’s not another killzone 2 bait and switch and still looks this good when it comes out next year.
so i was gonna post about the obama rally yesterday, which was pretty cool and the first time i’d seen a presidential candidate in person since the ill-fated al gore incident of 2000, but i don’t really have much to say about it other than it was kinda cool, i was really far away, and really hungry the whole time. also, here’s a picture of one of my coworkers in a silly green shirt right behind him:
but what i’m really excited about is metal gear solid: 4, which is about a month away still. i mean, i have it tattooed on my arm, but i might just have to pick up one of these too:
i figure this way i can be a huge nerd and a bluetooth jackass at the same time. ladies, one at a time please.
updated: just for the hell of it, a sweet mgs4 trailer:
