i did not go to see watchmen at midnight last night.  not because i don’t want to see it, and not because i don’t like midnight showings, but rather i hate midnight showings of comic book movies.  i’m fine with nerds- i am a nerd.  but comic book nerds i can’t stand.  especially when comic book nerds start talking about movies.  comic book nerds know shit about movies.  and they’re very loud.  so when people who don’t know shit about movies are talking very loudly about movies, movies that they don’t know shit about, i get intensely aggravated.  that’s why i swore off midnight showings of comic book movies after the dark knight. i will most likely catch watchmen tomorrow.  i’ll report back then.

sidenote: no joke, a comic book nerd in one of my film classes tried to tell the class that star wars a) was a direct remake of seven samurai and b) the new trilogy had a titular line.  both are obviously complete horseshit.  i would have laughed if the dude was making an upright citizens brigade reference with b, but he clearly wasn’t.

The Road

i was initially gonna write about some of the early watchmen reviews (you can read them over at /film) and then i read this review of the road, john hilcoat’s adaptation of carmac mccarthy’s amazing book.  here’s a snippet:

The movie sucks you into a completely different world and it’s nearly impossible to peel yourself away from it for it’s duration. as slow-paced as this movie can be, like in the book, there are riviting moments that will make you jump out of your seat with disgust, excitment, and suspense. These moments are spaced out perfectly and with each one you are pulled in further into the horror being presented. This was a giant screening with a huge movie theatre completely filled. Most people had no knowledge of what they were getting themelves into. The audience was very communal, silent at the right parts and audibly gasping at other parts. The feel I got from reactions on my way out was that they were all on a crazy ride together. People who didn’t like depressing movies didn’t like it, but people who liked GOOD movies, even if it is depressing, loved it. There was one jump cut in particular that I can remember that reminded me of the famous cut in 2001: A Space Oddesy. A dramatic cut from what was to what is. It’s in the beginning and it’ll hit you hard.

fuck yes. reasons i’m excited are the following.

  1. i love the road. it really just tears into you when you read it and you feel every part of it. it’s bleak, but there’s hope in the relationship between the man and his son.
  2. john hillcoat directed the proposition, which is a fantastic modern western.  and he brought nick cave with him to do the score on the road.
  3. viggo mortensen? check. charlize theron? check. guy pierce? check. robert duvall? check. michael k. williams (aka, OMAR LITTLE!)? mutha fuckin’ check, son.
  4. they’ve apparently left the reason behind the destruction ambiguous, which is awesome.

anyway, i can’t wait for this to come out. i’m actually a little more excited for this than watchmen. blasphemy, i know.

“Not sure who launched the attack on Cylon Earth. My guess is either the Cylons repeated the mistake of making robotic cylons, or they were sneak attacked by the Kobol Humans. It’s also possible the Earth Cylons had factions like we Earth Humans, and just nuked themseleves. Or Ozymandias did it.”

watchmen is saved

watchmen_smileyif you’re a nerd like me, you’ve been super excited about zach snyder’s watchmen adaptation since that first amazing smashing pumpkins-themed trailer that aired before the dark knight this past summer.  and if you’ve followed along all these months, then you might be aware of the legal shit-storm that has been brewing between fox and warner brothers over the rights to the film.  in a nutshell, fox held the rights (sort of) for the property for like 15 years and basically did nothing with it.  warner brothers decides “fuck fox, we’re making this damn movie” and proceeds to do so.  fox decides to essentially let this happen and then sues at the last minute, after the movie is finished, to get their piece (seeing as their most successful movie last year was what happens in vegas, they could use it).  for a hot minute there, it looked like at the very least the march 6 release date was toast and at the very worst any release date was as well.  nerds everywhere were up in arms, attacking fox, attacking warner brotheres, attacking random old ladies in the street, demanding blood for the possible delay of the finally filmed, previously dubbed by terry gilliam as “unfilmable,” adaptation of the best graphic novel of all time.

well, /film reported yesterday, and ew confirmed this morning, that a settlement has been reached and watchmen will be released on march 6.  the details are currently sketchy, but essentially warner brothers is gonna pay fox some money up front as well as a percentage of the box office gross.  and we get watchmen.  finally.

is it march yet?
